THE ELEPHANT IN THE ROOM

Here, we have to address the elephant in the room: the fact that we are listening to the voices of actors and not people who have actually grown up in Ambridge. In the course of carrying out the research, I had a brief online chat with the actor Barry Farrimond, who plays Ed. I asked him what direction he was given with regard to Ed's accent, and he revealed that he couldn't recall ever receiving any specific guidance, although he did say it was a long time ago when he started the role. This would suggest that the actors were left to their own devices to find the voice of their characters, which goes some way to explaining both the generic rurality, and the variation between speakers. However, it is unlikely that this lack of direction is still the case. Sean O'Connor, the show's editor from 2013–16, made the well-publicised decision to professionalise the cast by replacing some of the younger characters who were played by untrained actors, with drama-schooled alternatives. Within this context, it is very likely that a new era of professionalism developed, one in which something as crucial as a character's accent was not left to chance. This is speculation on my part, but I do wonder if Mia's overt Grundyness came as the result of specific direction. It might be that she ultimately over-delivered when compared to the rest of the family, but the underlying decision for her to use this accent was perhaps a conscious choice.
